Throughout this unit there were multiple projects; artists steal, character remix, and two into one. All of which I did enjoy.
In the beginning of this unit we had a pre-assessment, the questions consisted of "Is stealing okay?","Difference between stealing and copying." My views from the pre-assessment haven't change much at all compared to now. I still firmly believe that it is indeed okay to steal another artists art, as long as you incorporate your own ideas and in some way or another make it your own. It isn't okay to completely copy another persons artwork though. In most cases if not all, we all steal other peoples ideas, even if we think we thought of it on our own, someone in the past must have come up with it at one point or another.
For the artist steal project; I had many obstacles whilst in the process of doing this. For one, I wasn't grasping the concept of this project nor was I understanding on how to go about this. I liked this project the least out of all. In the end, how I incorporated my project to fit under the section of "Artist steal" I had to 'take' an idea and somehow make it my own. That was the difficult part, I had to think of ways as to how I could make this an artist steal and not just a simple copy. After thinking for a long while, I had come up with the idea of doing a black out poem. I thoroughly enjoy black out poems, I think the idea of them is sort of in genius. So, for this project, I took a piece of text [this will be the constant] and I handed it to different people, and had them make their own black out poem. The goal of this was to see how each individuals poems turned out with the same piece of text. The outcome was interesting, it was a simple project, but it still got the point across, stealing the idea [black out poem] and creating it into my own, by making my own poem, along with others making their own.
Character remix was one of the projects I was most excited for.
I took Ariel [from the little mermaid] and remixed her into a more modern day 'punk' girl. From the image above, you can see how she was before and then after I added all these details to her. I was contemplating on whether or not to color her fully in, or to leave it in value [pencil] or add value in using pen. I kind of did a combination of all three. I added texture to her hair with a black ballpoint pen, added color on some of her tattoos with colored pencil, and then simply outlined her in black pen.
Two into One
I've done this project before, so hearing that we had to redo it, didn't make me too excited, however I did like how my piece turned out. I brought together a silhouette of a young boy with his mind opening and his creativity and ideas surrounding him. I was originally going to color this, I'm still on the fence about that, however I feel since that there is so much happening in this drawing, i think that maybe an outline in black pen will suffice. I think that if I add color it will overwhelm the photo too much, but also having it just in pencil is too "bland" I think a black outline will give the picture enough balance and consistency that it needs throughout it. The 'hill' like figures made up with lines, was a last minute addition and I think that it adds a lot to it. With this project, it challenged me creatively and also made me think of how I could fill up the white space that was around the silhouette of the boy. It was very much like a puzzle, and I found it enthralling.
Big question for this unit; how did I improve? What did I learn? Opinions?
Well, I've already given my opinions through this whole post, but to sum it all up, long and fun, challenged me in thinking outside of the box, and the outcome of thinking outside the box lead to success in the projects.
Improvements:
1. Using a black pen to draw with.[I normally go straight for the pencil, but pen was a different media, even though it was similar with the pencil.]
2. Proportions; with the silhouette of the boy and Ariel's body.
3. Adding texture; with Ariel's hair
4. Turned projects in on time therefore managing my time was more efficient this time around.
