To say that art has no meaning, is up to the eyes of the beholder. For example when you are walking around an art museum, and you see a canvas with nothing but the color blue on it, to you it may seem like just a canvas of blue yet to someone else it could reference to something out-worldly. Another example, tattoos. The numbers on a persons body may mean nothing to you, but it could represent something deeper. Art doesn't have to be contained to what you see with your eyes either, it can be music or writing, doesn't necessarily have to be a pretty picture. It could be something you feel, figuratively or literally. I think that in some aspect an assignment can hinder the meaning of art. The ways it can limit for example if a teacher says "draw a yellow cat with pink polk-a-dots", "draw (insert something specific)." However if a teacher makes an assignment that can be interpreted in different ways, it doesn't limit in the same way saying to draw a specific thing does. I personally am a huge fan of when a piece of artwork can be seen figuratively than literally or has a deeper meaning.
The first project was to pick an element and just go with it. This project was just to ease us into the whole aspect of doing art. I’ve done this project multiple times before, so it was a nice way to review.
I've known how to use different elements since I began art classes (sometime in Elementary school). It’s an easy concept and wide range of ideas and possibilities. They are easy to do, easy to get the hang of. I’ve started multiple projects with this concept but I never exactly finished these drawings, because I didn't feel the need to. I had the attitude of "I'll just start a new one tomorrow, maybe I'll like it more tomorrow." I didn't. While doing this project, I wanted it to be “PERFECT” but as I began to draw, I began to get more and more just done with the project, so I started to think that the uneven lines, the different sized figures turned it into an imperfect perfect piece. I picked color and line as my element. I originally going to do both line and value, but I felt as though it looked to plain and that the concept was lost. I added color to make the piece come together and more complete. So as I previously mentioned, I originally was going to do value as an element but it was too plain, so I livened it up by using colored pens and markers. I began the project with drawing it out with pencil then going over the pencil with a color, but eventually I ended up doing it free handed. |
